Male: A bright yellow bird with a black cap and wings and white wing bars and rump. Winter: Similar to female, but a bit brighter in color
Female: A dull olive yellow bird without a black cap, dark brown wings and a white rump.
Diet: White millet, thistle (Niger), purple coneflower seeds and insects.
Song: Lively series of trills, twitters, and swee notes.
Nest: Cup-shaped; female builds; one brood per year.
Eggs: Four to six; pale blue.
Incubation: Ten to twelve days; female incubates.
Fledging: Eleven to seventeen days; female and male feed young.
Notes: Often called the "wild canary". American Goldfinches nest in late summer and use silky down from wild thistle for nest. Listen for them to twitter while flying.
