Mourning Dove
Male: Smooth fawn colored dove with black spots on wings and tail. Single black spot behind and below eye. Pointed wedge-shaped tail with white edges. Gray patch on the head. Iridescent pink and green around neck.
Female: Similar to male; lacks iridescent neck feathers.
Diet: Millet, sunflower, mixed seeds, safflower and peanuts.
Song: Low, steady oohWOO-woo-woo-woo.
Nest: Platform; female and male build; two broods per year.
Eggs: Two to three; white, unmarked.
Incubation: Thirteen to fourteen days; female and male incubate, male during day, female at night.
Fledging: Twelve to fourteen days; female and male feed young.
Notes: Nest looks like a random assortment of sticks and leaves. Listen for a characteristic whistling sound when they fly. This is caused by wind rushing through wing feathers. Mourning doves have been known to nest in hanging flower pots.
