Nesting boxes
Nesting boxes are great for attracting birds! A proper nesting box should be at least seven feet off the ground on a slick metal pole. A nesting box on an easy to climb, wooden pole is not advisable. For each different type of bird comes a different nesting box and different height and placement requirements. If you don't care what comes, provide an 8" tall box with a three inch opening (this also works for American robins). For Eastern bluebirds, have the hole one and a half inches in diameter and the box itself five by five by eight inches high. For House wrens, the hole should be one and a half inches and the box should be four by four by six inches. Both species of chickadees might nest in boxes that are four by four by ten inches high with a hole that's one and a fourth inch. Make sure that the box has easy access for cleaning. Clean out the nesting boxes once every year, preferably during winter or fall. Also make sure that there aren't any residents before you clean it.
