White-Breasted Nuthatch
Male: Slate gray bird with a white belly, black cap and neck. Long thin bill is slightly upturned. Chestnut color under tail.
Female: Similar to male, but with a gray cap and neck.
Diet: Insects, suet, safflower, sunflower seeds, millet and mixed seeds.
Song: A rapid series of nasal whistles in low, grating pitch.
Nest: Cavity; female and male build; one brood per year.
Eggs: Five to seven; white with brown markings.
Incubation: Eleven to twelve days; female incubates.
Fledging: Thirteen to fourteen days; female and male feed young.
Notes: Often seen in mixed flocks of chickadees, Brown Creepers and Downy Woodpeckers. Listen for characteristic springtime call, whi-whi-whi-whi-whi given during February and March.
