One of my favorite birds is the Snow Bunting. I am fortunate to live in a rural area where farmlands and gravel roads abound. It’s the perfect location to find Snow Buntings. Large flocks gather along the plowed roadways, often in the company of Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs. As your car approaches, the Buntings move in unison like a school of fish, flashing their bright white underwings as they fly low across the road. They are often shy, making photography difficult, but if you move very slowly, and if you are very lucky, you might be able to get a photo or two before they move just out of range yet again.
There’s a foot of snow on the ground, the wind is blowing and it’s currently below zero. These are certainly not the ideal conditions for birding! However, even in these conditions, there are some interesting birds to be seen from the warmth of your car.
